Art Education

Art is a visual language. Learning a language always requires much patience and practice.  Consider how we learn a language. Babies hear their native language from the time a fetus starts to grow in his mother’s womb becoming comfortable with his mother’s language from birth.  Like learning a language, one should experience art fluently so that one learns the language of art.  One becomes comfortable after being exposed to art in her/his living conditions and then will have heightened interest to better understand and study art.  In other words, if one did not spend enough time experiencing art, she/he would not comprehend the practice or appreciation of art.  In this perspective, my teaching philosophy has always emphasized educating my students in the fundamentals of the language of art.  Understanding art requires practice; it is like learning a new language.  Even if one can communicate in that new language, there are many ways to speak it.  In art, there are so many different ways to speak.
